Tricycle operator arrested for allegedly defiling 10-yr-old girl

A 27-year-old tricycle operator has being detained by the ‘B’ Division of the Nigerian Police in Akwa Ibom State for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl.

The suspect, Edet Edem, who hails from Oku Iboku in Itu Local Government Area of the state, was said to have been apprehended by youth in the area.

He allegedly committed the crime in his rented apartment in Use Offot, Uyo Local Government Area and then abandoned the girl in Use Offot market square while she was bleeding profusely.

The abandoned girl (names withheld) was noticed by passersby and rushed to St Luke’s hospital, Anua, Uyo for medical treatment.

Edem who confessed to the crime said in his statement at Ewet Police station, that he is a primary school dropout.

“Yes I slept with her but when I noticed that she was bleeding, I cleaned the blood from the floor,’’ he said.

Ms. Mariam Daniel, who took the girl to the hospital, said she noticed that the girl was lying helplessly in the market square.

Daniel, a member of a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Journalists Alliance against Gender Based Violence, said she was moved by the victim’s pitiable state of health, and had to take her to the suspect’s residence, where she found her blood stains on the floor.

She said the news of the incident spread like wild fire, prompting youth in the community to launch a manhunt for the culprit and found him in his hometown in Oku Iboku, where he had gone to hide.

Speaking in an interview, the youth leader of Use Offot, Mr Fabian Ikpe, said the community was worried about the crime and had to search for the suspect, adding that when Edem was found, he wanted to know whether he would be allowed to go scot-free.

“We told him that he should cooperate with us and we took him to the police station,’’ he said.

A senior police officer who took the statement of the suspect said he would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations.

It was learnt that the wife of the state governor, Mrs Martha Emmanuel, has stepped into the matter and the victim would be given special medical care.

The commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Glory Edet, said seven persons have so far been convicted of rape and defilement in the state.
